The Rivers Eatery – Eco-friendly, allergy-friendly, vegan-friendly, and just plain friendly dining in northwest Wisconsin
I love the area where I grew up, but going out to eat in my home state of Wisconsin (the dairy state), and particularly in rural parts of Wisconsin, can be a challenge for me since I can’t have any dairy products. There is cheese on practically everything! However, believe it or not, one of my favorite restaurants to visit when we are back at my parents’ house is a pizza place. The Rivers Eatery is a totally unique pizza restaurant, where each pizza is created individually based on your order, then stone-fire cooked to perfection. The ingredients are fresh and healthy, and there are so many toppings to choose from that I can practically forget about the cheese!
This is a family-run business, which has grown out of hard work, attention to detail, and a vision of what healthy, eco-freindly, family dining could be. I eat there two or three times per year, but the family who owns and runs the place remembers me each time I visit. They can cater for many different food allergies, including people who eat dairy-free and gluten-free diets, and these are probably the two most difficult allergies to cater for at a pizza place, where the wheat-based crust and the cheese are normally crucial ingredients.
The Rivers Eatery is also unique in that you walk through a bookshop to get to the restaurant. The bookshop and pizza place are housed in a building called the Ideal Market, and it really does feel ideal. Set in Cable, Wisconsin, which is a very small town surrounded by beautiful natural wilderness (see my last post for some pictures of a hike we took nearby) and inhabited largely by cross-country skiers and avid cyclists, the Ideal Market’s unique set-up and philosophy sets it apart from anything else in the area.
One of my favorite features of the restaurant is their pay-it-forward chalkboard. Instead of buying a gift certificate for someone, you pay at the counter and write a message on the board so that the recipient can see it the next time they visit. It is just another touch which adds to the charm of the Rivers Eatery.
And the food and drinks will keep you coming back for more!
If you are ever in the Cable area, it is definitely worth a visit!
