Feel Good Friday

January 27, 2012

I’m not sure what you guys thought, but I really enjoyed doing something a bit different last Friday. I have re-named ‘Friday Features’ as ‘Feel Good Friday’, but the idea is still the same. On Fridays, I will write about about a few things which have caught my eye in the past week or so, and things I am excited about.

Birthday boy – Most importantly, I would like to wish the happiest of birthdays to my amazing Dad, whose birthday is on Monday (the 30th). I feel so incredibly lucky to have the two most amazing parents in the world – no one asks for less, or deserves more than them. I can’t put into words all that I have learned from my dad, and although I may deny it at times, I am a lot like both my parents…and deep down, I know this is a very good thing. 🙂 I’m sorry I can’t be there to celebrate with you, but I will be thinking of you (even more than usual) on Monday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD!!!

Feel good film –  The Boat that Rocked (UK title)/Pirate Radio (US title). This movie has been out for a while, but for some reason, it doesn’t seem like that many people have seen it. Or at least not enough people. 🙂 Ben and I saw it a while ago and loved it, and we have now shown it to my parents and Ben’s parents who all loved it. We just recently bought it and watched it again, and it is definitely worth owning. I could watch it over and over and still laugh all the way through every time. This movie is based on the true story of rock radio stations which were broadcast from ships off the coast of the UK (in international waters) in the mid-1960s when rock music was banned from the regular radio stations. It is very funny movie which brings the characters to life, written/directed by the same person who wrote/directed ‘Love Actually’. An added bonus is that the music in the movie is fantastic. Note: I have heard it criticized because apparently some of the songs were not yet released at the time the movie is set, but unless things like this bother you, I promise watching this will make your weekend better, whether you have seen it before or not.

FoodHomemade mushroom pesto. I made a big batch of this yesterday to try to give us a few more food options since Ben can’t have tomatoes, and I can’t have creamy sauces. We used it last night in our dinner, which I will tell you all about soon, and we are going to use it to make homemade pizzas tonight and possibly with pasta over the weekend or next week. It is so tasty, and so versatile. I have a feeling I will be making another batch very soon.

Photo – This photo isn’t really anything new, but it is one which I took when I was at home last summer, and we were all playing sports in the yard outside that day. Especially since it is Dad’s birthday soon, I am thinking of home and this picture reminds me of a really fun day with my family, as well as sunshine and blue skies!

Drink – Oat milk. Yep, that’s what it’s come to around here! Last week it was a grapefruit-flavored gin and tonic. This week it’s oat milk. I can’t say we’ve been drinking it, but oat milk has been our saving grace this week since Ben can’t have soy or almond milk, and I can’t have regular milk. It has made cooking so much easier, so I felt that it deserved a mention. 🙂

Don’t worry, though…I have something a bit more interesting in the fridge to drink this evening. 🙂

Happy Friday Everyone! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

P.S. Any thoughts on Feel Good Friday vs. Friday Features…or whether I should just stick to normal posts?

How do you feel about rice milk? Is that ‘kosher’ for both of you?

Hi Emily. Yes, that’s a good idea too. I have thought about it, but Ben was specifically tested for oat milk and wasn’t allergic, so for now it seems to make sense to stick to this. But maybe in a couple of weeks we will feel like switching it up! Thanks for thinking of this – it is always great getting suggestions.

I have never had oat milk. Do you know how much protein it has? I try to say away from soy because I tend to eat a lot of soy, but I’d love to find another milk with a decent protein count. I like the Feeling Good Friday post, and hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks Jordan! I hope you had a good weekend too!

I just looked up the exact amounts of protein in oat, soy, and rice milk…at least the brands I buy. For 100 mL (not very much), soy milk has 3.4 g protein, oat milk has 1g protein, and rice milk has .1 g protein. So, soy milk wins big-time in terms of the protein count. But I guess oat milk at least still has some protein if you are concerned about getting too much soy. It’s always a bit of a balancing act with nutrition, isn’t it?! It feels like each food has its benefits and down-sides – hope you find a balance you are happy with!

      ~Emily~
